The church of San Severo al Pendino is a monumental church in Naples, currently deconsecrated and used as an exhibition space. The structure has been restored to its original architecture, highlighting the Renaissance entablatures and pillars hidden by the nineteenth-century stuccoes. San Severo was built in 1575 on the ancient church with the hospital of Santa Maria in Selice, modified and renovated between 1599 and 1620 based on a design by Gian Giacomo Conforto.
The interior has the typical architectural features of the sixteenth century, in which the eighteenth-century altars in polychrome marble are inserted. Worthy of note is the sepulchral monument of Giovanni Alfonso Bisvallo, sculpted by Gerolamo D’Auria in 1617, dismembered by the earthquake of 1688 and recomposed in the eighteenth-century restoration in the altar of the right transept.
The usability of the municipally owned church is ensured by the Artistic Heritage and Cultural Heritage Service of the IX Central Directorate for Cultural Policies of the Municipality of Naples with municipal staff and socially useful workers.
The valuable nave of the structure hosts concerts, temporary exhibitions and cultural events in keeping with the monumentality of the place.
